Movie Magic from Bali: Viking Sunset Studios Recreates 1948 Malaysia for Peluru Senja: The Ghost and the Gun, Premiering in Indonesian Theaters This Friday
CARY, NC, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — BALI, INDONESIA — Viking Sunset Studios announced today that the period drama “Peluru Senja: The Ghost and the Gun” will officially hit Indonesian theaters, premiering across CGV Cinemas nationwide on Friday, October 23rd. Set against the volatile outbreak of the 1948 Malayan Emergency—an era marked by guerrilla conflict, colonial fracture, and historic tragedies such as Batang Kali—the film follows a harrowing struggle of survival, conflicting loyalties, and resistance as British forces and local villagers collide in a fight for freedom and identity.
A true cross-border collaboration, the feature is co-produced by London-based LDNO Productions and Limbo Pictures, Singapore-based Films Positive, and Bali-based Viking Sunset Studios. Directed by Anshul Tiwari from a screenplay penned by Singaporean screenwriter Abhi Kumar, “The Ghost and the Gun” was produced by Debasmita Dasgupta, Mikail Mahmud Chowdhury, Tim Willrich, and Bo H. Holmgreen.
To capture the post-colonial era with uncompromising authenticity, lead actors were flown in directly from Malaysia—including acclaimed stars Fabian Loo (*Chin Liu*) and Hazman Al-Idrus (*Izwan*)—starring alongside celebrated Indonesian talent Asmara Abigail (*Siti*), with international cast members Brett Tutor, Ben Garner Gray, and Indra Pacique. Reflecting the complex, multi-ethnic reality of the era, the film weaves dialogues across Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, English, and Chinese to deliver deep historical realism.
The scale of the production marks a major leap forward for regional cinema. On the backlot and soundstages of Viking Sunset Studios along Bali’s coast, crews designed and constructed 14 elaborate, historically authentic sets recreating 1948 Malaya. The production transformed Tabanan’s rugged coastal cliffs, black-sand beaches, and dense tropical jungle into colonial rubber plantations, remote jungle outposts, and period villages, seamlessly marrying large-scale practical sets with Bali’s dramatic landscapes to craft a raw, immersive period aesthetic.
The theatrical premiere coincides with Jakarta Film Week, marking a massive dual-showcase week in the capital for Viking Sunset Studios. Alongside the wide theatrical debut of “The Ghost and the Gun”, Viking Sunset Studios is also screening its award-winning feature film “Bandit” with director Brian L. Tan, highlighting the studio’s diverse production slate across Indonesia’s prestigious festival circuit and commercial theaters alike.
The release kicks off with an exclusive Red Carpet Gala Premiere on Friday evening, October 23rd, at 19:30 WIB at CGV Cinemas Pacific Place in Jakarta, attended by the cast, producers, and international film dignitaries ahead of nationwide screenings.
“Transforming Bali into 1948 Malaya with 14 full-scale period sets proved what this island and our local crews can achieve on the international stage,” said Bo H. Holmgreen, Founder and CEO of Viking Sunset Studios. “By flying in premier Malaysian talent to collaborate alongside Indonesian actors and production teams, we showed that Southeast Asia can mount world-class cinematic productions right here in Bali. The Indonesian movie industry can be immensely proud of the craftsmanship, scale, and heart poured into every frame.”
“This film demanded uncompromising historical authenticity and deep emotional weight,” said producer Mikail Chowdhury. “Viking Sunset Studios gave us the physical infrastructure, backlot scale, and dedicated crew needed to realize such an ambitious vision. Seeing our Malaysian cast, Indonesian talent, and international partners unite seamlessly on screen makes this nationwide premiere a proud triumph for all of us.”
The theatrical rollout is presented in collaboration with 13 Entertainment, spearheading cinema booking across Indonesia. “Navigating theater placement for a production of this artistic depth and scale is essential to ensuring audiences experience it properly on the big screen,” said Manoj K. Samtani of 13 Entertainment.
“Our mission from day one has been showing Bali and Indonesia to the world,” added Bo H. Holmgreen. “We have shot five full feature films here over the past year, but this is the only one where we used pure movie magic to move an entire other country right here to Bali. Whether competing on the global festival circuit from Cannes to international markets, partnering with world-class creators like Singer Studios and Lucy Liu on Pirate Queen, or investing heavily in cutting-edge studio infrastructure and international co-productions, we are proving that Bali is a premier destination for world cinema. Indonesian talent and locations belong on the grandest cinematic stages, and we are just getting started.”
“Peluru Senja: The Ghost and the Gun” debuts in Indonesian theaters at CGV Cinemas starting Friday, October 23rd. Tickets and showtimes are available at participating box offices and online via CGV platforms.
